Dirt is one of the hardest things you can try to simulate in a game. It's solid until it isn't, it flows until it stops, it gets bigger when you dig it, and it sticks to itself when it's damp. Too many variables, too many ways to go wrong, so most games fake it.
I didn't want to fake it. Last time the ground was a slab and my excavator's bucket slid over it like a sled. This is everything it took to get from there to teeth that cut, trenches with real walls, dirt that pours, breaks apart, rolls and piles up, tracks that leave ruts, mud you can get stuck in, and a truck to haul it all away. Every problem, every bug, and how close it's getting: the dirt physics are about 95% roughed out.
If this is what I can build in a weekend... just imagine what's possible in a week, a month, a year.
