A new series on the channel: alongside the bush-flying game, I'm building a second game, a mining game with real dirt physics.
Real dirt is one of the hardest things to do in a video game, so most games fake it. I'm building a mining game where...
the dirt is real: you cut into it, it fills the bucket, it piles up, it slumps, and it pushes back.
Step one isn't the dirt. It's the machine that digs it. In this first devlog I build an excavator where nothing is
animated: hydraulic cylinders with real pressures, one shared pump, and tracks that only grip as hard as the weight on
them. Then I try to make it push its own bucket into the ground hard enough to lift one of its tracks off the ground.
It tips over first.
Next time: the ground has to give.
